Lawrence Power & Esa-Pekka Salonen: Lockdown Commissions

Violist Lawrence Power commissions world-leading composers to create new works for him to perform.

Lawrence Power is one of the UK’s foremost violists, a champion of contemporary composition who performs regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival and across the UK. In response to the exceptional circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, he has commissioned ten composers representing a broad spectrum of classical music to create short pieces for unaccompanied viola. He performs each piece for film at recognised venues around the country, which for now must remain closed, in a powerful exploration of the relationship between their silence and the pieces written for him.

From The Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, Power performs a piece composed for him by legendary pioneer Esa-Pekka Salonen. As Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor at London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Salonen has explored the relationship between music and digital technology for the modern age. His latest work objets trouvés for solo viola and drone demonstrates the resilience of creativity in a unique moment of history.
