Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about visiting the International Festival. If you have another question not listed here you can contact us, send an email to or send us a message on Facebook or Twitter.

What is your return ticket policy?

If you are unable to attend an event at the 2021 Edinburgh International Festival for any reason related to Covid 19, we will refund the full cost of your ticket. Please see the refund policy for further details.

How will the Festival keep staff and audiences safe?

We will work with the Scottish Government and other relevant authorities to implement appropriate Covid safety measures. These include shorter performances with no intervals, physical distancing, regular cleaning, and contactless ticketing. Full details of our Covid safety measures will be published in the coming months. 

Do you have a contact tracing policy?

Yes, we will work with the NHS Test & Protect scheme to help prevent community transmission. For further information on Test and Protect see here.

Can performances be viewed online from home?

Selected performances will be recorded and broadcast online for free. All details will be available on our website after our programme launches on Wednesday 2 June.

When are tickets available?

Once the 2021 International Festival programme launches on Wednesday 2 June, bookings will open at 10am on Friday 11 June.

Will there be a priority booking?

International Festival members will have access to a priority booking period. The priority booking period is staggered, as follows: 

Ambassador Members – Wednesday 2 June  
Patron and Patron Plus Members – Thursday 3 June  
Friend and Friend Plus Members – Friday 4 June

Will there be a physical box office this year?

This year we will encourage all transactions to be made via our website and our phone lines on +44 (0)131 473 2000. This will help us minimise human contact during the Covid pandemic.

Can I take part in the International Festival?

All companies and artists taking part in the International Festival are here by invitation from our Festival Director. The planning of each year's International Festival – an exhilarating mix of music, theatre, opera and dance from the world's leading artists – is an ongoing process. Projects and programmes are developed with companies and individual performers often several years in advance.

The Festival Director and colleagues keep in touch with what's happening in the arts around the globe, travelling the world in search of artists and performances to bring to Edinburgh.

Do you share City of Edinburgh’s commitment to 2030 net zero carbon emissions?

Yes, the International Festival shares the City of Edinburgh’s commitment to the 2030 net zero carbon emissions target. We are currently working on an environmental action plan which will be published in the coming months.
